Black & White Masterclass

William Patino is a New Zealand–based landscape photographer and local guide living in Te Anau on the South Island. Originally from Wollongong, Australia, he found photography in 2012, which changed the way he sees the world.

Since 2014, he has worked full time as a landscape photographer, leading workshops and photo tours internationally, while also working with selected brands and clients.

His work is strongly connected to wilderness and the natural environment. Rather than creating only beautiful images, he aims to express the emotions and atmosphere he experiences outdoors.

You will learn how to create strong black and white landscape images by understanding light and contrast. The training explains why you do not always need golden hour to make powerful photos. A key focus is on the four main foundations of landscape photography and how improving each one can raise the quality of your work.

The course also explores classic black and white images from well-known photographers to understand what makes them timeless.

Several field sessions are included. You will join real shoots in locations such as Milford Sound and Fiordland, where the full creative process is explained step by step. There are also lessons on working with a wide-angle lens, adjusting in-camera settings, photographing seascapes, and noticing small natural details that often create the most meaningful images.

In the editing section, you will see how RAW files are processed in Lightroom and Photoshop to create clean and powerful black and white results.

By the end of the course, you will understand how to control tonal range, use contrast effectively, guide the viewer through light and shadow, and convert your RAW files into balanced black and white landscape photographs.
