Dalmatian Pelicans

Located in northern Greece, near the borders with Bulgaria and Macedonia, Lake Kerkini is one of those places where you can truly get close to wildlife and birds. It is also one of the most important sites in Europe for Dalmatian pelicans, and one of the best birdwatching areas in Europe, home to around 300 rare and protected species that live and breed there. It is no surprise that in 2006 this area was designated as a National Park.

The purpose of the trip is to observe and photograph Dalmatian pelicans living in the Kerkini Lake National Park. These majestic and beautiful birds were, until recently, still classified as vulnerable to extinction. In recent years, thanks to conservation efforts, the European population has shown a slight increase. The birds are particularly striking in winter, during their breeding season, when the pouch beneath their beak turns a vivid red and their heads are crowned with a curly crest, giving them a somewhat “wild” appearance.

Beyond the natural values, the landscapes are equally impressive. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks, and the Belasica range to the north provides a magnificent backdrop for photography.
