Experience the spectacular autumn landscapes of New Zealand's South Island on this nine-day, small-group photography tour led by professional landscape photographer Richard Hume.
Taking place from 10–18 April 2028, the tour travels through the Mackenzie Country, Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, Wānaka, Mount Aspiring National Park and Fiordland. Autumn is one of the most rewarding seasons for landscape photography in New Zealand, with golden foliage, cooler mornings, low-angle light and the possibility of mist and atmospheric conditions around lakes and mountain valleys.
Our photographic locations include Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, the Tasman and Hooker Valleys, the alpine landscapes surrounding Aoraki / Mount Cook, the lakes and rivers around Wānaka, and the dramatic scenery of Fiordland, including Milford Sound.
The tour provides opportunities to photograph autumn colour reflected in lakes and rivers, snow-capped alpine peaks, waterfalls, glacial lakes, native forest and remote mountain valleys. We aim to be on location for the best morning and evening light, while remaining flexible to take advantage of changing weather and photographic opportunities.
With a maximum of six participants, the tour offers individual attention and practical, on-location photography tuition. We explore composition, working with natural light, camera techniques, filters and long exposures, with guidance tailored to each photographer's experience.
The emphasis is on thoughtful, unhurried photography rather than rushing between viewpoints. With more than 25 years of experience photographing New Zealand's landscapes, Richard brings extensive local knowledge and a flexible approach to making the most of each location.
